The Society for the Study of Addiction (the Society) is established for charitable purposes and is constituted as a company limited by guarantee, governed by its Articles of Association and Byelaws.

Annual reports

The Society generates income from its Annual Conference and membership subscriptions, as well as through its academic journals, Addiction and Addiction Biology. It reinvests this income back into the sector to support people, projects, and research in addiction science.

Charities registered in England or Wales are required to report their income and spending every year. The SSA does this via its annual reports, which include the President’s review of the year’s achievements and future plans, a statement of the Society’s financial position, and an independent audit of the Society’s financial statements. See below the last three annual reports:

Management and leadership

The Society is led by a Board of Trustees, which provides scientific, business, and financial direction to the charitable company, in accordance with the trustee role description. A Chief Executive Officer is appointed by the Board of Trustees to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Society. The Board of Trustees also appoints editors to run the Society’s journals.

The Board of Trustees has three officer positions – the President, the Vice President, and the Treasurer. These officers sit on a governance committee, which has been set up to aid and direct the board in all aspects of governance and specifically to ensure that the board adopts and follows recommended practice for smaller charities given in the Charity Governance Code. Other committees and panels exist to monitor the Society’s finances, strategic plans, academic schemes, journals, and other publications.

New trustees go through an induction process, and training in aspects of good governance is given to trustees as appropriate.
