Biography

Dr Smith specialises in the field of addiction psychiatry and is interested in how philosophy, the arts, and history can be integrated into psychiatric training. He serves on the committees of Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP), Scottish addiction specialists group, and Alcohol and Drug History Society (ADHS), and is currently Chair of the Medical Council on Alcohol (MCA) education committee. He continues to be involved in research, and has particular interests in alcohol-related brain damage and the genetics of addiction.

Dr Iain Smith studied medicine at the University of Glasgow from 1976 to 1983, achieving a first-class honours BSc in Animal Developmental Biology in 1980, and graduating MBChB in 1983. He entered psychiatry in 1984, passing the MRCPsych examination in 1988. Dr Smith also graduated MD from the University of Glasgow in 2018 on the basis of his thesis exploring the medical response to alcohol problems in Scotland from 1855 to 1925.

Dr Smith held the post of Lecturer in Psychological Medicine at the University of Glasgow medical school from 1988 to 1992, was a Consultant Psychiatrist at Gartnavel Royal Hospital from 1992 to 2019, and became an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow in 1992. He has worked as a Consultant with NHS Forth Valley since 2019.
